About Family Promise of Ontario County
Family Promise of Ontario County is a local affiliate of the leading national organization preventing and ending family homelessness. Our mission is to help families experiencing homelessness and low-income families achieve sustainable independence through a community-based response. Our approach involves prevention services before families become homeless, emergency shelter and case management services to help families experiencing homelessness, and stabilization programs once families have secured housing. Homelessness in Ontario County is growing at a rapid rate. According to the Ontario County Department of Social Services, homelessness in Ontario County has increased by more than 300% since 2020. In 2024 the Ontario County DSS provided emergency shelter for an average of 24 families consisting of 109 individuals on any given night. The latest McKinney Vento data reported that 408 school-aged children experienced homelessness in Ontario County during the 2023/2024 school year. Unfortunately, resources for families in need remain extremely limited. Thanks to the Molly & Ed Shill Cares Foundation and other community partners, Family Promise of Ontario County is on an aggressive path to expand resources and capacity. While we currently offer emergency shelter and case management services to families in 4 apartments in Canandaigua and Geneva NY, we are hard at work getting ready to open what will be the first family homeless shelter in Ontario County which is located at 495 North Main Street, Canandaigua NY. This shelter will provide emergency shelter and case management services to 7 additional families with a maximum capacity of 30 individuals. In addition to emergency shelter, Family Promise of Ontario County helps minimize the number of children and families that experience the trauma of being in a homeless situation by providing financial resources and case management services to prevent eviction.
