About Ferndown and Uddens BID
A Business Improvement District (BID) is a partnership between the local business community that develops and takes forward a project or projects that will benefit their trading environment. The improvements made by a BID are determined by businesses and can include core services such as additional cleansing and security or more wide-ranging projects such as recycling, business support, improved infrastructure, area branding and promotion. The Ferndown and Uddens BID covers the Ferndown and Uddens Industrial Estates in Dorset. A BID can only be formed following consultation and a ballot in which businesses vote on a BID Proposal or business plan for the area. The Ferndown and Uddens BID is due to go to ballot in early 2014. A BID Proposal or Business Plan sets out businesses’ priorities for improvements for the area and area services, as well as how the BID will be managed and operated. If successful a BID is then funded through the BID levy for a period of 5 years, which is a small percentage of a businesses’ rateable value. All businesses eligible to pay the levy are balloted. The BID levy is on business occupiers rather than property owners. The Ferndown and Uddens BID is a not-for-profit company managed by a Board of Directors made up of company owners and representatives within the proposed BID levy area. Day to day management is provided by a BID Development Manager. BIDs operate for a maximum of five years and must then go through a renewal ballot process.
