About First Nations Advocates Against Family Violence (formerly the NFVPLS Forum)
First Nations Advocates Against Family Violence (FNAAFV) is the leading National voice in family violence affecting First Nations people, effectively advocating for reforms and working collaboratively with our members and partners to support the delivery of culturally sensitive, self-driven and holistic solutions that foster healing, resilience, and safety. Formerly the National Family Violence and Prevention Legal Services Forum (the NFVPLS Forum), the Forum was established in 2012 as the national Peak body for community-controlled family violence prevention legal services (FVPLS) around Australia that provide front-line, culturally-safe services to First Nations people affected by family violence, and predominantly women and their children. The FVPLS Program is unique in Australia and internationally. The sector is led by a network of First Nations’ women with extensive professional experience in family violence prevention, and the majority of FVPLS employees are First Nations staff. The FVPLS sector provides both legal and non-legal services and programs to clients and communities to prevent family violence. Now operating as a standalone incorporated body (as of July 1, 2024), FNAAFV is a community-controlled national peak body that works in partnership with the FVPLS sector to raise awareness about family violence effecting First Nations people, and advocates for culturally safe legal and other holistic responses to the issue.
