About First Steps Count Child and Community Centre
First Steps Count is a collaborative hub providing a safe and welcoming place for families to access support when they need it. First Steps Count is proud to be considered an innovative child and family hub in Taree, an area of regional NSW that is characterised by adversity, with 25.8% of children in the Greater Taree area considered to be developmentally vulnerable across one or more domains (AEDC data.) First Steps Count offers an integrated model of service delivery, facilitating programs and activities in response to community need. Our service partners are critical stakeholder in helping us to design the operating model of the Centre. Our Purpose: Fostering stronger communities by working together with families and service providers to benefit children in a beautiful environment. First Steps Count Incorporated is a not-for-profit and registered charity with DGR1 status. After 12 years of planning, fundraising and community co-design Stage 1 of First Steps Count opened on 9 February 2023 and became fully operational with the opening of Stage 2 in March 2024. Funding for construction of the Centre was received from NSW State Government, Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation and the Australian Government. First Steps Count has received some initial start up funding for operational costs through Paul Ramsay Foundation. Currently, the hub does not receive recurrent backbone funding to support the operational model. First Steps Count Incorporated is committed to determining and implementing a viable financial sustainability plan to ensure the Centre can remain operational for hundreds of children and families in our region. The building itself has been informed by the Living Building Challenge and biophilic design, creating a connection to our natural environment and engendering positive health and wellbeing for staff and families. Rooms are rented out to organisations and businesses across the government, non-government and private sector.
