Fletcher Jones, the man, was born in 1895 in Bendigo. As unassuming place as any for an Australian icon to begin. Sticking to principles of quality workmanship and service, and encouraged by townsfolk who were always happy for an opportunity to buy his well-fitting wares, his reputation spread and business developed rapidly. By 1924, no longer able to keep up with demand around the region on his own, Fletcher Jones opened up three shops in Warrnambool and one in Hamilton. The first Melbourne store was opened in Collins Street in 1946. Between 1949 and 1952, stores were opened in Adelaide, Sydney and Hobart. In many ways Fletcher was ahead of his time in customer service and put a sincere love of tailoring into his work. Despite more permissive attitudes being common, he continued to wear suits to the beach, not out of prudishness, but from the love for fine clothing. The Fletcher Jones name was spreading far and wide across the country, as was the reputation for fine tailoring, expert fitting, and classic style. When the Olympic Games came to Melbourne, the company provided skirts for the Australian team and created the uniforms for the 1982 Commonwealth Games team. Fletcher Jones famously said, “No man is too hard to fit”. Today, we still stand by his claim. In fact, it’s in our fabric.
