The foundation named “Seminare il futuro” – literally “seed the future” – was born in 2019 as a partnership among Libera Fondazione Antroposofica Rudolf Steiner, NaturaSì Spa, Cooperativa Girolomoni together with the Swiss Foundation "Fonds für Kulturpflanzenentwicklung" The reason why we founded a no profit organization taking care about seeds, is that seeds are the origin of everything. Seeds are the starting point of a proper agricultural ecosystem. Nowadays only a small range of seeds is really suitable for organic farming, so we need to research seeds suitable to a low inputs-based farming. This is especially important, considering the impact of the climate change and the consequent farmer's needs for resilient seeds. So, our main activity today is from one side, especially for vegetables, to select and map local varieties that we think have the potential to be good for the purpose of organic farming. At the same time, especially for cereals, our foundation is engaged on creating also new biodiversity, through the method of the organic breeding. Breeding based on the traditional techniques, but with the difference that the whole process is managed in organic from the real beginning and through every single step of the research, keeping the farmers involved in every phase of the research. The reason we have chosen to be a non-profit organisation, is to guarantee free access of the varieties to the farmers, as we believe that “seeds are a common good”.
