La Forgraf è nata per colmare le lacune esistenti sul mercato delle attrezzature per l'industria grafica relativamente alla finitura degli stampati. In un passato anche recente, l'attenzione degli operatori era principalmente rivolta alle due fasi tradizionali del ciclo produttivo grafico, cioe' alla preparazione della forma ed alla stampa in senso stretto, trascurando spesso la finitura, che veniva eseguita internamente con mezzi tecnicamente superati o all'esterno tramite le Legatorie. Per l'attività della tipografia l'Imprenditore investiva innanzitutto nell'acquisto di attrezzature che normalmente vengono definite "di produzione", quali i sistemi di fotocomposizione e macchine da stampa, che costituivano la parte preponderante dell'investimento. Per la finitura degli stampati si ricorreva alle Legatorie, dotate di macchinari adeguati, quali raccoglitori, piegatrici, brossuratrici, cordonatrici, etc. ; così il prodotto finito veniva reso commerciabile, anche se con costi piu' elevati e con un allungamento dei tempi di consegna.
