About Foundation for Hearing & Speech Resources (FHSR)
For over 65 years, the Foundation for Hearing and Speech Resources (FHSR) has worked to ensure that children who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) have the resources and support they need to thrive. We envision a world where hearing loss is never a barrier to connection, learning, or opportunity. FHSR creates and funds programs that promote equity, inclusion, and long-term success for DHH children across Illinois and the Midwest. Our work focuses on three core pillars: Music to My Ears (MTME): Music programming designed specifically for DHH children, including early childhood enrichment, private instrumental lessons, and music therapy. MTME supports cognitive, speech, and social development while fostering creativity and confidence. EARs (Education, Advocacy, and Resources): Comprehensive support for families, educators, and providers caring for students with hearing loss. EARs includes IEP/504 guidance, an Education Coordinator, early literacy training, a book scholarship program, and our “Ages & Stages” online parent resource hub. Clinical & Community Outreach: Strategic partnerships with hospitals, schools, and community organizations to expand access to essential services like loaner hearing equipment, audiology support. FHSR also creates popular community-building events for DHH children and their families, alleviating the isolation that can accompany a pediatric hearing loss diagnosis. In 2024, FHSR directly impacted more than 950 DHH children through these integrated programs. We are a grassroots, board-driven nonprofit powered by families, professionals, and community partners with first-hand experience with DHH children, who all believe every child deserves the chance to reach their full potential.
