About Friends of Big Morongo Canyon Preserve
Big Morongo Canyon Preserve is open daily throughout the year from 7:30 am to sunset. Admission is free but donations are welcomed. Ideal months to visit are in the fall, winter, and spring seasons. As a part of Sand to Snow National Monument, Big Morongo Canyon Preserve serves as an integral connection between the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts and the alpine peaks of the San Bernardino Mountains. The Preserve entrance is one block south of State Highway 62 in Morongo Valley, a community located between Palm Springs and Joshua Tree National Park. The Preserve boundaries extend from Morongo Valley to the bottom of Big Morongo Canyon in the west end of the Coachella Valley, northwest of Desert Hot Springs. Elevations on the Preserve range from 600 feet on the canyon floor to over 3000 feet at the ridgetops. Several trails, including boardwalks through the marsh and stream habitats, meander through the Preserve. Over the past years our visitation has increased dramatically and we are anticipating an even greater increase in visitors in the years ahead. The Friends of Big Morongo Canyon Preserve is dedicated to the exploration, preservation, and stewardship of the Preserve by protecting and managing its resources, and by providing educational programs, access for wildlife viewing, and recreational opportunities for the enjoyment of its visitors. Today the Preserve is managed in partnership between San Bernardino County, Bureau of Land Management and Friends of Big Morongo Canyon Preserve (a 501(c)(3) organization) to protect rare and endangered wildlife, to promote the growth and restoration of a wide variety of plants, and to offer educational opportunities for students and nature lovers of all ages.
