About Friends Of Fort Knox
Friends of Fort Knox (FoFK) manages the original Fort Knox and the Fort Knox Historic Site under a lease agreement with the State of Maine. Formed in 1992 with an urgent mission to "Save the Fort", FoFK raised millions along with a referendum and bond approved by the people of Maine to repair the failing roof of the 150 year old Civil War Fort. Located on the west bank of the Penobscot River in Prospect, Maine, in an area known as the Penobscot Narrows, Fort Knox is one of the best-preserved military fortifications on the New England seacoast. The fort has many unique architectural features, as well as a rich history behind its walls. FoFK also manages the Penobscot Narrows Bridge Observatory under a separate lease agreement with Maine DoT. Taller Than the Statue of Liberty, the Penobscot Narrows Bridge Observatory is the crown jewel of coastal Maine, offering spectacular 360-degree views of the Penobscot River and Bay, the Maine countryside and the distant western mountains. Tourists and travel writers alike have been attracted to the unique character of this structure, its historical significance and the stunning vistas. Engineering and transportation geeks are fascinated by the award-winning and innovative bridge design. FoFK is governed by a volunteer board of directors and managed by the executive director. There are ~25 seasonal employees and 100's of volunteers that support the daily operations including: gate ticket booth, gift shop, grounds maintenance, observatory attendants, museum, tour guides and a series of fund raising and special events during the May 1st to October 31st season each year. Some of the more notable special events include Civil War reenactments, Medieval Faire, Pirate Parlay, Moon Viewings, Ghost Tours and Fright at the Fort. Over the past 20 years, Fright at the Fort has grown to become one of the top 5 Halloween destinations in Maine with 10,000 to 15,000 enjoying the jump scares over the 5 nights leading to Halloween.
