About Friends of Wehr Nature Center
The Friends of Wehr Nature Center, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the support and promotion of the Wehr Nature Center and its environmental education programs. It provides financial support for every aspect of the Center including accessibility, natural area stewardship, children’s programming, special public events, summer interns, Nature in the Parks, live animals and professional development. Wehr Nature Center is 220 acres located within Whitnall Park. Over 200,000 visitors a year hike our trails, participate in our education programs, and experience our unique special events. More than 5 miles of trails wander through woodlands, wetlands, oak savanna, prairie, and around Mallard Lake. Our accessible boardwalk covers over 1/3 mile of trail by the lake. Wehr is the nature/environmental education center for the Milwaukee County Park System operated in partnership with UW Extension. Volunteers provide over 14,000 hours a year supporting the Center’s many programs and projects. The purpose of Wehr Nature Center is to inspire current and future generations to explore and value the natural world. To achieve this mission Wehr provides programming for ages 2-102. Our early childhood programs are designed to enhance child development and early learning. School field trips are coordinated with school curriculum and state and national educational standards. Public education programs include citizen science, general natural history, outdoor skills, and cultural history. Special programs and events provide unique nature experiences for a variety of ages whether it is Maple Sugar Weekend, Woodcocks and Wine, Bug Day, Halloween Haunts, Cider Sunday and many more.
