We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to expanding and enhancing Advance Care Planning (ACP) conversations by distilling and distributing the best tools and resources for end-of-life choice-making, and providing useful, accessible, free support based on these resources. In 2023, our founder Roberta lost her husband of 40 years, David, to Alzheimer’s disease. David was a psychiatrist who loved language. His disease stripped him of much of the richness in his life. He decided to take his life by voluntarily stopping eating and drinking (VSED). Roberta and her two children struggled to prepare for VSED, hitting an impenetrable tangle of misinformation and a wall of medical rejection. David’s Advance Directive did not capture his true wishes. His Will, for which he’d paid thousands in attorney fees, ended up in probate and did not leave the legacy he intended. It is crucial to record your health care choices while you are well. Through a brief natural conversation, Fiona can create an Advance Directive (or “Living Will”) for you. This document is legally required for you to control your medical preferences and to name a Representative (Medical Power of Attorney) who will speak on your behalf if you become unable or unwilling to make important decisions. Take a few minutes to consider and record your wishes before a crisis happens. Fully Informed Advance Care Planning includes considering all legal options. Some people who are living with chronic pain, suffering, or loss of mental fitness choose to hasten their death. One way to do this is by Voluntarily Stopping Eating and Drinking (or VSED), which is legal in all states. Another way is to self-administer lethal medications prescribed by a doctor. This is called Medical Aid in Dying (or MAID). It is legal in 10 states and the District of Columbia. Our free virtual advisor Victor can answer many questions about VSED and MAID.
