About Gainesville Opportunity Center

The Gainesville Opportunity Center ("GOC") follows a clubhouse model that empowers adults with mental illness to build stamina and confidence through membership, shared tasks, socialization, and employment/educational opportunities. The clubhouse model is an evidence-based self-directed recovery model built on intrinsic motivation. The GOC is accredited by Clubhouse International, which oversees 370 clubhouses worldwide, including 19 in Florida. Research shows that of the adults who obtain membership with clubhouses, 98% achieved fewer (or no) psychiatric hospitalizations and 97% reported fewer (or no) encounters with law enforcement. Our Members participate in all aspects of running the clubhouse operations, including culinary, administrative, janitorial, gardening, and media tasks. There are no “Member only” or “Staff only” tasks--Members and staff always work hand-in-hand together. GOC also engages in a variety of social and community outreach activities to help build friendships and relationships. Clubhouse membership is voluntary with no membership fees.
