Intense survival energy meant for action is generated in our bodies during a traumatic experience. You could also call this survival energy “emotional energy”. When we can’t complete survival-motivated actions during a traumatic event, or we lack compassionate support, or we’re unable to understand and articulate what happened to us, that intense emotional energy remains stuck in our bodies. Our sense of reality and our sense of self become warped. We feel sick, anxious, avoidant, disconnected, emotionally volatile and unsafe. The ability to comprehend (with our minds) why we feel the way we feel is how we begin healing. But until we are able to identify, name and honor the specific emotions that have been waiting all these years to be liberated, and bring supportive movement into the process of healing, we can’t fully reconnect with ourselves and others.
