About George Derby Care Society
George Derby Centre has been a cornerstone of care and support for Canadian veterans and the broader community since its founding on April 10, 1947. Originally opened as the George Derby Health and Occupation Centre, it served as a rehabilitation facility for World War II veterans returning home. In 1962, the Centre became part of Vancouver’s Shaughnessy Hospital as the George Derby Wing, further solidifying its role in veteran care. In 1988, George Derby Centre transitioned into a 300-bed licensed long-term care facility, dedicated to providing high-quality residential care to veterans eligible through Veterans Affairs Canada. Today, under the Community Care and Assisted Living Act, George Derby Centre offers a full spectrum of care services, including complex care, dementia care, and palliative and end-of-life support. With 300 publicly subsidized long-term care beds, the Centre proudly operates under contract with Fraser Health. While our roots lie in serving Canada’s veterans, we have also evolved to support eligible civilians. Through compassionate, inclusive care and strong community connections, George Derby Centre continues to honour its legacy—providing dignity, respect, and personalized support to all who call our Centre home. George Derby Centre has been accredited by Accreditation Canada for 2022-2026, establishing George Derby Centre as a facility exceeding national standards of quality in the provision of health services.
