As time has progressed, the need for this specialty has grown exponentially. The reason is that traffic collisions are violent events comprised of complicated dynamics and injury mechanisms. Law enforcement officers are no longer educated in these areas, and cannot perform these functions. This leads to incorrect determinations of guilt and cause, and inappropriate charges being filed. The physics principles are usually confusing to the inexperienced, and therefore require clear, concise and thorough analysis. This analysis must then be able to be provided to a trier-of-fact in a manner that they can easily understand.
