About Georgetown University Health Justice Alliance
The Georgetown University Health Justice Alliance (HJA) is a nationally recognized academic medical-legal partnership (MLP) between Georgetown’s Medical and Law Centers and MedStar Health that is training the next generation of health and law champions to work together to improve health, justice, and racial equity. As part of its interprofessional education, service, and research missions, HJA engages learners across three MLPs focused on delivering health justice for DC families. The Health Justice Alliance Law Clinic (Law Clinic) partners with the Georgetown University Hospital Department of Community Pediatrics to assist DC families facing legal barriers impacting their health and well-being, such as unsafe housing, food insecurity, and lack of access to equitable education. Georgetown Law student attorneys advocate for families in formal and informal legal proceedings and are supervised by experienced attorneys. Georgetown medical students in the Health Justice Scholars Track are embedded in the Law Clinic and work with student attorney teams to support families. The Cancer Legal Assistance and Well-being Project (Cancer LAW) partners with MedStar Georgetown Cancer Institute at MedStar Washington Hospital Center to provide no-cost legal services to cancer patients facing a variety of health-harming legal needs, including employment, disability, housing, advanced planning for healthcare, and public benefits. Cancer LAW is the first cancer-specific MLP in DC. The Perinatal Legal Assistance and Well-being Project (Perinatal LAW) partners with MedStar Washington Hospital Center as part of the Women’s & Infants’ Services (WIS) “Safe Babies Safe Moms” program to provide no-cost legal services to pregnant and postpartum patients in legal cases involving key drivers of health disparities, such as financial insecurity, housing conditions, and employment discrimination. Perinatal LAW is the first perinatal-specific MLP in DC.
