About Gilkes Energy
Gilkes Energy is the UK’s leading independent hydropower and pumped storage hydro project developer. Established in 2009 we have developed and built 17 conventional hydropower projects, all located in Scotland. Along with providing and raising investment capital and using a ‘Build, Own & Operate’ model we manage projects through their five phases: 1. Origination & Feasibility – identification of projects, initial technical and economic screening. 2. Permitting & Planning – managing the planning consent process, and other regulatory processes. 3. Tendering & Procurement – financial modelling, tendering, commercial contracts and securing ‘route to market’. 4. Construction – managing the construction process, administering contracts & controlling costs. 5. Operations - managing operations and maintenance, optimizing performance & reporting to investors. In 2018 we moved our focus from conventional small-scale hydro to much larger Pumped Storage Hydro ‘PSH’ and launched our flagship Earba and Fearna projects. This change in focus reflected the fact that the UK needs vast amounts of energy storage in order to balance the grid. We are a small multi-skilled team which includes a full suite of engineering, consenting, project management, commercial, financial and legal expertise ‘under one roof’.
