Studies show that each year, 157,000 youth between the ages of 10-24 receive medical care for self medicated injury. Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death in teens, 51% of teenage girls are afraid of talking to their parents about their problems, 41% of 1-3rd grade and 51% of 9-10 year old girls say they "feel better about themselves if they are on a diet," and nearly half of all females said they would prefer to be run over by a truck than be fat. These statistics reflect a generation of young females that are consumed by the pursuit of perfection in the eyes of the world. This pursuit positions individuals to be perpetually “self-focused” and hinders their ability to live in full freedom or to effectively serve others around them. Girl Above desires to encourage girls to live counter-culturally, meaning that they do not easily adopt destructive behaviors and values simply because they are influenced by the majority of society. Instead, we hope that they would live a life that is rooted in the pursuit of pure truth, kindness, purity and joy that can only come from a solidified identity. This standard of living requires these young ladies to step out in boldness and bravery. Girl Above desires to both challenge and equip these girls to step into this counter cultural lifestyle. We truly believe that Girl Above has the power to create a movement of young girls that will think differently about themselves and others. They will be rooted in confidence and kindness. They will have hope that they can overcome their hardships not only as a result of seeing others who have overcome, but also as a result of learning the power of grace, redemption and love of God.
