About Girlhood Reclaimed
Girlhood Reclaimed has been set up as a response to the growing dominance of misogynist narratives and the impact it has on young women, girls and non-binary folk. At Girlhood Reclaimed, we focus on those young people that misogynistic narratives aim directly to subordinate and harm: girls and young women, including trans girls and young women, as well as any non-binary youth who might see themselves in the work that we do (we appreciate that many may not). Although our own focus is on girlhood, we appreciate the work being done by others to support trans and non-binary youth, as well as to support boys and young men to undo the harm that is also being done to them by extreme misogyny. Girlhood Reclaimed aims • to explore and deepen our understanding of the impacts of misogyny on young people through feminist research, project-based work and training • to create safe spaces via our project based work for young women, girls and non-binary folk to make sense of these impacts and voice the harm misogyny is causing them. To also engage with them in creative, joyful feminist activism. • to offer a whole community approach to our work by offering training for adults working with and caring for young people, supporting them to deepen their understanding of misogyny as well as explore ways in which they can disrupt the harm that it causes within their contexts. Our approach is grounded in intersectional feminism that seeks to explore and understand the intersecting impacts of dominant misogynistic narratives in the lives of all those who identify with girlhood. Our work is delivered by Rae, whose background in youth work, women’s mental health, and the male violence against women and girls (MVAWG) sector. Rae has extensive experience in delivering empathic training and youth work that is empowering and creates space for people to not only deeply understand the impact of gender-based violence but engage with its impact on their own lives and those around them.
