About Girls' Adventures in Math
On a snowy winter day in 2014, teachers at the Speyer Legacy School dreamed up the idea of a math competition for elementary and middle school girls, to foster their passion for math at an early age. They enlisted the team at Math-M-Addicts to bring their idea to life. And so, Girls' Adventures in Math (GAIM) was born. GAIM is an engaging, community-building, mind-bending, Math Olympiad for girls in grades 3-8. Teams of girls compete together to unravel mathematical puzzles inspired by phenomenal women from history. The competition features 16 open-ended, themed questions in a comic-book format. These questions are meant to be challenging and thought-provoking in order to promote creative problem solving and teamwork. The problems revolve around four women role models, chosen from a variety of continents, time periods, and disciplines. We want girls from all walks of life to be able to identify with these women and to be inspired by their legacies. Once the girls finish the competition portion, everyone—students, teachers, parents—gather together to play a curated set of strategy games from around the world. OUR JOURNEY SO FAR In 2016, we held our first GAIM competition at the Speyer Legacy School, hosting around 170 students. We were very well-received and were encouraged to expand GAIM even further. This year, we were able to hold GAIM in six locations worldwide: Indiana, Kansas, The Navajo Nation, New York City, Upstate New York, and an upcoming competition in London. This meant that we were able to serve around 400 girls worldwide. We have ambitious hopes for increasing the number of GAIM locations, both nationwide and worldwide, this upcoming year.
