About Girls of Hamblen County
Girls Inc. of Hamblen County’s mission is to inspire all girls to be strong, smart, and bold. Since 1972, we have worked to create a world where girls can grow up healthy, educated, and independent with a strong foundation for successful adult lives. We are a site-based program during the school year, picking girls up from any school they may attend in Hamblen County and transporting them safely to our Program Center. We also have an 8-week Summer Day Camp at our Center and outreach programs in the surrounding communities. Our research-based, hands-on programming helps girls gain confidence and prepare for adulthood through one-on-one tutoring with staff and community volunteers and educational enrichment programs. We work with girls ages 6-18, who come from varying backgrounds. Our current program serves a more diverse group than the overarching community we reside in. Specifically, 20% of our enrollees identify as Hispanic/Latin American, 8% identify as Black/African-American, 14% identify as Mixed/Multiracial, and 58% identify as White/Caucasian. 59% come from families or homes that make less than $40,000/year, only 40% live in a 2-parent home, and 12% do not live with a parent at all. We develop the whole girl by: - Increasing skills and enthusiasm in technology and engineering through our new Makerspace Program. - Keeping girls engaged in science and math through Operation SMART. - Focusing on physical and emotional health through self-esteem programs, nutrition education, and stress and coping programs through Building a Better You. - Giving girls a safe space to explore self-expressive art through Artrageous. - Teaching girls about money, the economy, investing, and budgeting through Smart Cents programs. - And so much more!
