About Gladys Love Project
Founded in 2020 by Kym Motley, Gladys Love Project is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing love and awareness for our beloved seniors and caregivers and to foster community between older and younger generations. The organization is inspired by Kym's beloved grandmother, Gladys who loved to entertain friends and embodied a fearless, sassy approach to life. From age 94 to 99, she lived in an assisted living facility. During that time, she never lost her desire to feel beautiful; her outfit was not complete until she put on lipstick and jewelry. Clasps on necklaces were difficult, so Kym made her long necklaces without clasps. The necklaces weren’t expensive but the colored, faceted beads made her smile and feel special. In November 2017, Kym headed to sunny North Carolina to her mom’s assisted living facility to do a test run of a jewelry making activity with the seniors and staff members there, who then each chose a necklace or bracelet of their choice as a memento. During later visits to see her mom, Kym saw seniors still wearing their jewelry. After seeing the positive impact of the project, Kym decided to turn the Gladys Love Project from an independent art project into a nonprofit organization. The project now pairs local volunteer groups with senior communities, in order to foster community between generations. During COVID-19, the project will send love notes with positive affirmations to seniors and caregivers. After COVID-19, we will reintroduce teaching volunteer groups how to make jewelry to gift to seniors and caregivers.
