The Federal Government of Nigeria in collaboration with the World Bank established the Global Distance Learning Centre (GDLI) in Abuja as a window for building access to globally relevant resources for both the public and private sectors of the Nigerian economy. This is one of seven such centers funded by the World Bank in seven African countries, with the foundation stone of the Nigeria GDLI laid in June 2005. The Global Distance Learning Institute Abuja is an Affiliate of the Global Development Learning Network (GDLN). The GDLN Affiliates are designed to collaborate in holding events that connect people across countries and regions for learning and dialogue on development issues, along with collaboration with best-in-class institutions around the world to offer various training and skills development courses. Offering a combination of distant learning tools such as interactive video conferencing, the Internet, and expert facilitation and learning techniques, the GDLN Affiliates enable individuals, teams and organizations around the world to communicate, share knowledge and learn from each others’ experience in a timely and cost-effective manner. The institution is aimed at providing online and on campus training, capacity building and technology services in support of the Nigerian quest to leap frog into the apex of the digital age. Programs at the institute include graduate, undergraduate and diploma courses, some of which are run in partnership with Nigerian and foreign universities. Area of focus includes: Information Technology, Civil Service Reform, Project Management, Telemedicine and Business Admin. and Communication Technology to mention a few.
