About Gluten Free Friends

Originally a celiac support group, Gluten Free Friends advocates for inclusive, safe dining for college students with food allergies or celiac disease. Mandatory meal plans with inadequate safe options for students with food restrictions can lead to food insecurity and have been the basis for several successful lawsuits. Our GFF College Dining Survey initiative shines a light on college dining and encourages colleges to better meet special dietary needs. By partnering with other food allergy and celiac organizations, Gluten Free Friends aims to dramatically improve the safety and quality of life for these college students. The GFF plan to improve dining options for college students with celiac disease and food allergies: Increase Awareness Among College Leadership: -Educate colleges on the legal rights of students with food-related disabilities under the Americans with Disabilities Act and the marketing advantage of meeting this challenge well -Increase collaboration among celiac and food allergy organizations to communicate this message -Give schools an approach for assessing and meeting the challenge -Create online content to share best practices, compliance implications, and trends Empower Students and Prospective Families: -Shine the light on how well individual schools manage the challenge by posting candid surveys and providing feedback to schools -Create online content to help students and prospective families self-advocate -Facilitate cross-college student communication Help us increase awareness and bring about change!
