About Golden Bear Racing

The Western New England University SAE Baja Golden Bear Racing Team is an organization on campus that focuses on building the best possible vehicle to compete in the annual Society of Automotive Engineers Baja competition. Our vehicle is completely designed and manufactured by students in the club with the goal of placing as high as possible in the SAE competition. The club teaches many hands-on engineering skills that build on what students learn in the classroom and prepare them for the real world. Advanced SolidWorks, 3D printing, manual and CNC milling, manual and CNC lathe work, TIG and MIG welding, and Finite Element Analysis are just some of the skills that engineering students will learn to utilize in the club. Business students also have a great opportunity to put their skills to work since we get most of our funding through sponsorships. The club also highly utilizes social media and one of the largest point totals in the SAE competition is the business presentation. The Baja Team also utilizes the track behind Southwood Hall to test new designs and iterations. WNEU was the first Baja program in the US, and second in the world to utilize an electronically controlled variable transmission at competition. The actual SAE Baja competition consists of four days of rigorous challenges and events that push the vehicle to its breaking point. These events include acceleration, maneuverability, business presentation, design presentation, brake testing, and even a four-hour endurance race! These competitions happen across the US and include teams from around the world.
