Goldin-Rudahl Systems (formerly Heurika Geographics) founders have developed Smartroad Tools(tm), a new technology to detect hidden damage in highways and other high-value earth-supported linear infrastructure. In addition to roads, our technology is applicable to flood prevention levees, railways, tunnels, and airport runways. In some cases this technique also applies to oil and gas pipelines and to mining waste ponds. It is particularly valuable for assuring the safe transport of hazardous materials. Roads, highways, airport runways, railways, and levees (dikes) all consist of carefully designed and built layers which ultimately rest on an earthen subbase. Over time erosion, nearby construction, weather, seismic activity, and other causes can weaken or create gaps in this subbase. There is no sign of this on the surface, until a collapse suddenly occurs. Previously there was no practical way to monitor the condition of the underlying earthen subgrade. Our "smart" material can be embedded during construction or reconstruction. It consumes no power and requires no electrical connections. Once installed it provides an easy-to-use and inexpensive means to verify the integrity of the supporting earth. Surveys can easily be conducted monthly or as needed, and no special skills are required to conduct the survey. Research results, which have been presented at conferences in the U.S., Europe, and Asia support the practicality of this technology. Working prototypes have been created, bringing us to Technology Readiness Level 4. We are currently negotiating to secure research locations where we can conduct full-scale testing.
