Good Theater, a professional nonprofit theater founded in 2001 and based in Portland, Maine, has been producing high-quality theatrical productions for over two decades. As Maine’s largest employer of locally-based theater artists, we are dedicated to creating exceptional art, supporting local talent, and expanding community access to the transformative power of live theater. Our mission is threefold: Create Exceptional Art – Present professional, diverse theatrical productions that resonate with audiences of all backgrounds and highlight the best of Maine’s talent. Support Local Artists – Fairly compensate and provide consistent employment opportunities for Maine-based artists, contributing to the sustainability of the arts in our state. Expand Community Access – Leverage the arts as a tool for connection, education, and inclusion by offering programs and productions that are affordable and accessible to all. In 2025, we proudly opened as the theater-in-residence and primary tenant at the newly renovated, 480-seat Stevens Square Theater. This move has transformed an underutilized performance space in the heart of Portland into a vibrant cultural hub, providing a state-of-the-art venue for our acclaimed productions as well as a wide range of community and cultural events. As the primary tenant, we also manage all venue bookings, helping to catalyze community partnerships, nurture creative collaborations, and elevate Portland as a premier arts destination. Through our work, we aim not only to entertain but to spark dialogue, build connections, and contribute to Maine’s creative economy. We are committed to enriching the cultural fabric of our community, supporting the growth of local talent, and making the arts accessible to all.
