Today’s public administration is rooted in solving yesterday’s problems. Many of the processes and procedures governments across the country engage in every day, including the very bureaucracy itself, grew up in the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s. While the principles at the heart of that approach - fairness, anti-corruption, reliability - are still necessary to safeguard public trust they are simply no longer sufficient to face the challenges of the 21st century. Governments must reinvent themselves and their services to remain relevant and effective for the communities serve. Yet with strained budgets and depleted workforces, there simply aren’t enough hours in the day for public leaders and managers to tackle these challenges on their own.
