About Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative
GLSI, a Michigan-based nonprofit education organization, was founded in 2007 with a mission to develop active, knowledgeable lifelong stewards of Great Lakes region waters, ecoystems and communities through place-based stewardship education. GLSI accomplishes its mission through a network of community-based regional service hubs positioned throughout Michigan, as well as a central organization that serves educators and communities throughout the Great Lakes region. GLSI’s programs are anchored by its innovative model of place-based stewardship education and related educator development. GLSI's approach to teaching and learning results in vibrant, hands-on experiences that increase student achievement and help young people develop 21st century leadership skills while becoming lifelong stewards of their communities and environment. GLSI's model is centered in offering immersive professional development around place-based teaching pedagogy for K–12th grade teachers and community partners, building and sustaining regional ecosystems of school-community partnerships, and providing national leadership and innovation for place-based education and environmental stewardship. Each year, GLSI works immersively with 300-500 classroom teachers, hundreds of community partners, and dozens of state, regional, and federal agencies to harness the power of place in learning and leadership development for 10,000+ K-12 students in the Great Lakes region. GLSI organizes and hosts the National Place-Based Education Conference bienially at various locations in the Great Lakes region. The conference is renowned for the focus on attendee experience in place, the strong community it has gathered and sustained, and the culture of fellowship, celebration, and support that it nurtures.
