At Great War Footsteps, we make maps ... and much more. Follow your Digger around the world and across the battlefields of World War One with a custom-made 3D interactive map drawing together the amazing record collections available in Australian archives. If you have a digger in your family, you probably already know of a troopship, a unit name. Perhaps casualty reports, medals, the names of battles that raise a lump in your throat on Anzac Day. Whether they lie under a white marker beside their mates, or whether they came home. Perhaps you are one of the thousands who access the AIF service records in the National Archives each year. At Great War Footsteps, our job just begins with the Service Record. We cross reference dates with entries from Unit Dairies, collect photographs & add trench maps to create an interactive 3D map that will move you around the world, and across battlefields. You might want just a simple map, pinning the major locations and battles that your Diggers' unit participated in. You might want to know where they billeted each night . . . who won the inter-battalion footie competition in the lull after Messines . . . and before Passchendaele . . . detailed locations of the trenches and gullies they moved in and out of as the War went on. . . . the movements of companies on specific days. . . . where the enemy machine gun positions were.
