About Greater Astoria Historical Society

Greater Astoria Historical Society, founded in 1985 is the place to learn and celebrate Long Island City and its neighborhoods. Through education programs, exhibitions, the research library, our historic sites, and special events, GAHS offers New Yorkers and visitors to Queens a chance to connect with the heritage of Queens. The Greater Astoria Historical Society is the repository for the broader Long Island City’s documents and has continued to expand our services to its neighborhoods community. More than 50,000 newspapers, maps, documents and artifacts, as well as 150,000 photographs are housed and preserved in our collection. You are invited to celebrate Long Island City’s communities from Sunnyside and Hunters Point, to Dutch Kills, Ravenswood, Steinway and Old Astoria Village by participating in the Greater Astoria Historical Society. You can do so by attending an upcoming event, by exploring our great city’s neighborhoods, or viewing the documents and photographs in our on-line digital collections, or by viewing our latest exhibition. Spend some time of the blog of our affiliate, Forgotten New York run by the Dean of NYC Urban Geographers, Kevin Walsh. We co-promote is walking tours around the city and jointly give lectures and write books together. His website can be found here: www.forgotten-ny.com
