Because “HUNGER ” is a universal issue in most colleges in the US, Greater Than Ourselves has partnered with a New Jersey College to enhance their ability to provide free, fresh, and nutritional meals and snacks for their students. Our organizational goals are to partner with other educational institutions, such as Technical and Vocational Education Schools to provide meals and other needed program assistance. Our mission is embracing our youth by promoting the economic and educational well-being of underserved students. Our history started in 1983, providing affordable housing for senior citizens in East Orange, NJ, a first of its kind initiated by ordinary citizens. Senior housing was our focus for many years, but in 2011, our focus evolved to adult education, offering programs in career development, computer skills, business entrepreneurship, public speaking and English as a second language. Our new purpose was to give people the necessary tools to make a difference in the lives of their families and in the community. We are now Greater Than Ourselves and though our focus has changed, we remain committed to helping people in our community. We are determined that no college student should face hunger while seeking their education. Hunger can impact a student’s ability to excel due to stress and inability to focus, often affecting their performance and grades which can ultimately impact their level of long term career success. It is our goal to break this cycle.
