greenSand focuses on removing certified CO2 using the mineral Olivine. Olivine is available in large quantities around the world. Olivine reacts relatively quickly with the (acidic) CO2 in the atmosphere compared to other types of stone. The hardness of the olivine is between 6.5 and 7. Olivine can be used as a substitute for granite, basalt and porphyry in construction, roads and agriculture. Ground olivine is particularly suitable for semi-hardening and fill sand. greenSand is a scaling-up company that sells olivine to remove CO2 by sequestering CO2 by enhanced weathering with olivine. There are 2 products sold: Certified olivine, which replaces common sand and stones, and the greenSand CO2 Certificates calculated with the validated model. As sales increase, logistics costs are reduced. Even with the current CO2 price, it is economically attractive to use olivine. More and more applications are developed, ranging from inspection train paths, in addition to potting soils, fill sand, parking lots, bicycle paths of semi-hardening. A worldwide search is on for cheap processes to sequester CO2 by mineral reactions, called enhanced weathering. Removal by reactions with olivine is an attractive option, because it is widely available and reacts easily with the (acid) CO2 from the atmosphere. When olivine is crushed, it weathers within a couple of years, depending on the grain size and humidity. The reaction is exothermic but slow. The end-products of the reaction are silicon dioxide, magnesium carbonate, and small amounts of iron oxide. greenSand is een initiatief van Eddy Wijnker. greenSand richt zich op het opruimen van gecertificeerd CO2 door verwering van het mineraal Olivijn. Olivijn reageert ten opzichte van andere steensoorten relatief snel met het (zure) CO2 in de atmosfeer. In de bouw, constructie, wegen en landbouw vervangt olivijn zand en stenen. Tevens voedend voor tuin en groen. De bicarbonaat (=kalk) oplossingen gaan verzuring van de bodem tegen.
