About Gruter Institute

The mission of the Gruter Institute is to build a richer understanding of the underlying behaviors at the heart of society’s most pressing problems and to understand how law and other institutions facilitate or hinder those behaviors. To that end, for over forty years, the Institute has brought together leaders from diverse fields ranging from evolutionary biology, economics, anthropology, finance and law to exchange knowledge and foster collaboration across disciplines. These collaborations – “Co-Labs” – focus on core questions involving cooperation, trust, and society. Co-Labs result in tangible outputs, including conferences, publications, policy recommendations and the architecture of innovative institutional and legal policies. By harnessing this unique inter-disciplinary toolkit, the Institute brings new insights to challenges ranging from pandemic policy, understanding innovation, leadership, regulation, artificial intelligence and other pressing societal issues. Through more than 150 conferences and publications, the Institute continues to foster a unique interdisciplinary hub that catalyzes research at the intersection of law, economics and human behavior.
