About Gwangju Biennale Foundation
The Gwangju Biennale was founded in 1995 in memory of the spirits of the civil uprising of the 1980 repression of the Gwangju Democratization Movement and served as Asia’s oldest biennial of contemporary art. The biennale is dedicated to creating dialogues between artistic visions from all around the globe, shed light on cultural practices that have been overlooked in the past, and honouring the challenges inscribed within the city’s fabric. The Gwangju Biennale Foundation is a nonprofit initiative for contemporary discourse and culture relying on funding from governmental institutions and key players from the private sector. Under the helm of previous curators that include Kerry Brougher, Okwui Enwezor, Charles Esche, Massimiliano Gioni, Hou Hanru, Jessica Morgan, Yongwoo Lee, Young-Chul Lee, Kwangsoo Oh, Maria Lind, and Harald Szeemann, the Gwangju Biennale has established itself as a highlight of the international contemporary art biennial circuit.
