About GWU’s Asian American Student Association
Asian American Student Association is a student-led organization at The George Washington University in DC, dedicated to educating our peers and community about the Asian American identity. This group was founded to create a safe and inclusive space for members and allies of our community. These spaces are intended for essential conversations surrounding issues prevalent in the Asian American community. We aim to educate, advocate for, and empower our peers within GW. AASA is constantly looking to interrogate what it means to be Asian American as we understand that this label encompasses many identities and experiences. AASA does not define what it means to be Asian American, but looks to create a space where students may discuss this question themselves. AASA's Vision: • Teach our community and peers about Asian American identities and interrogate what it means to be Asian American • Where do we fit into the greater picture of people of color? • Create a safe space to have uncomfortable discussions that encourage people to question their biases and grow • Create a safe and radical community for Asian Americans on campus; cultivate a sense of unity among different Asian American ethnicities • Learn from and stand in solidarity with other marginalized communities on campus in the fight against marginalization and work toward liberation (This includes being staunchly against transphobia, sexism, racism, anti-Blackness, capitalism, and imperialism) • Empower our own community and others
