About Habitat for Humanity South Africa
Habitat's vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Here in South Africa we bring people together to build homes, communities and hope. Our focus has expanded from not only building individual houses, but building entire involved communities. Community participation, ownership and leadership are vital in the growth of sustainable communities. Our mission principles: * Develop new and viable shelter. * Advocate for affordable housing. * Promote dignity and hope throughout the community. * Support sustainable and transformational development. * Build leadership and self-manangement skills. There is a growing need to address the poverty and living conditions in South Africa. As of 2016: - 12 million people are in need adequate housing. - 40% of the population lives on R22 per day (roughly $1.50) - Unemployment rate is 25% - 2 million people have poor access to infrastructure like roads, water and sanitation. It is clear that providing a home addresses the immediate need for decent shelter, however, this home cannot be built in isolation from employment, public transport, social services, and a supportive environment. The developmental focus must shift to creating more sustainable human settlements that offer the opportunity to thrive both economically and socially. Habitat for Humanity South Africa continues to build upon achievements in the communities where we currently have multi-year strategic projects. These communities include: Umgababa in KwaZulu-Natal Pelican Park in the Western Cape Orange Farm in Gauteng We continue to walk alongside these communities to help them thrive by developing their leadership skills. Through leveraging our deep community development practice on the ground, to advocating for change in the government's systems, we intend to widen our impact further to reach communities across South Africa.
