HABITAT61 CREATIVE HUB NPO is a youth-centered nonprofit organisation committed to fostering literacy, creative expression, and cultural exchange in marginalised communities. Established to address South Africa’s literacy crisis, we use literature, storytelling, and the arts as powerful tools for education, empowerment, and economic transformation. Our mission is to empower youth in working-class communities through reading, writing, and performance, cultivating a positive reading and writing culture while providing opportunities for personal and professional growth. Founded in 2019 in the City of Ekurhuleni, South Africa, our primary focus is to support vulnerable youth from working-class and underserved communities, including townships, rural areas, informal settlements, and inner-city neighbourhoods. We aim to help young people positively respond to social and economic challenges, including South Africa’s historical memory and its impact on education, limited access to quality basic education and early childhood development, youth unemployment, socio-economic barriers, and the absence of a strong reading culture. The lack of access to extracurricular activities and creative entrepreneurship opportunities further limits the potential of young people in these communities. HABITAT61 CREATIVE HUB NPO provides innovative literacy and arts-based programs that bridge the gap between education and economic opportunities. Through creative arts education, public speaking, performance arts, and digital literacy, we equip youth with skills that prepare them for the future. Our creative writing and storytelling initiatives encourage self-expression through workshops, competitions, and publications. Career guidance and work readiness programs help young people transition beyond the classroom, while our advocacy efforts push for improved educational and recreational facilities aligned with the demands of the 4th Industrial Revolution.
