About Harlow Art Trust
Harlow Art Trust is guardian to Harlow Sculpture Town's public sculptures which include the works of Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, and Auguste Rodin. Established in 1953, the founding members of the Trust set out with a mission to beautify the post-war New Town of Harlow by commissioning, purchasing and siting sculpture across its public spaces. This still continues today with Harlow welcoming its 108th sculpture 'Minerva' by Sculpture Town Artist in Residence Irena Posner in 2023. Harlow Art Trust also manages the Gibberd Gallery which is visual arts space and home to the Sir Frederick Gibberd Watercolour Collection, several sculptures, and an annual programme of exhibitions. The watercolour collection is on permanent display in the Gibberd Gallery and was donated by the late architect of Harlow New Town, Sir Frederick Gibberd in 1984. The collection includes works by John Nash, John Piper, Elizabeth Blackadder, and Edward Bawden. The Gibberd Gallery is also host to a yearly programme of exhibitions and events. Recent exhibitions include the return of former Harlow resident and sculptor Lee Grandjean with his first Harlow solo exhibition 'Seeing Things', and the annual Harlow Open which in 2023 displayed 200 artworks of various mediums from 145 artists ranging from those at the beginning of their art journey to international contemporary artists. As well as a free to enter gallery, Harlow Art Trust works with local partners and charities to make art and culture accessible by providing free workshops and events throughout Harlow. Recent partners included Essex Cultural Diversity Project, Essex Book Festival, and Integration Support Services.
