At Haskapa, we are proud pioneers in introducing the Haskap berry to the world. We are driven by a passion for promoting a nutritious, plant-based diet enriched with purple anthocyanins - a key component in supporting lifelong health and wellbeing. Thought to have originated in the frozen wilderness of Siberia and been carried by birds to the northern Japanese Island of Hokkaido, the berry was known and loved by the indigenous Ainu people who named it “haskap” meaning ‘many things (fruits) on branches.’ More recently haskap berries have been cultivated as an agricultural crop around the world including in Canada and Eastern Europe. Haskap berries were only registered as a Traditional Food in the European Union in 2018. Haskap plants are also known as honeyberry, blue honeysuckle and sweet berry honeysuckle. The deep blue skin and crimson flesh give the haskap berry 3 times the antioxidants and 4 times the anthocyanins of blueberries. In fact, they have one of the highest recorded anthocyanin values of any berry on the planet, which are well retained after freeze drying.
