About Health Bridges for Peace (HBP)
Health Bridges for Peace (HBP) is newly submitted as a registered Non-profit Organization with the State of Maryland and will sponsor diverse intra-religious oriented health care professionals to codesign and deliver health projects together via mission trips. The basic premise is that in post conflict or security challenged environments, health interventions conducted jointly amongst former combatants can serve as an entry point to dialogue and peace.Health as a Bridge for Peace is an approach to second track diplomacy originally undertaken in Central America in the 1980's and conceived of by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO, 1985). The construct is based on the idea that shared concerns around fundamental health issues can provide an entry point in the process of negotiation because health issues transcend political, economic, social, and ethnic divisions among peoples and provide a nexus for dialogue at multiple levels (Guerra de Macedo, 1994). Specifically, Health as a Bridge for Peace actions refer to efforts by health-oriented organizations and/or health professionals that are consciously designed to both a) improve public health (e.g. surveillance and response, water/sanitation, nutrition, medical services, mental health, and others) and b) contribute to promoting peace and/or reducing conflict. HBP represents a holistic view of the health for peace concept, including its environmental, health, political, economic, social, gender, and human development dimensions.
