About Health Impact Fund
The Health Impact Fund is a proposed new way to incentivize the development and delivery of new medicines through a pay-for-performance mechanism: pharmaceutical firms would agree to provide drugs at cost anywhere they are needed, and in exchange be rewarded from a donor-created fund on the basis of the drug’s actual health impact. This model would encourage firms to make those investments in the development of new medicines that would promise the largest returns in terms of improved human health. The HIF proposal has gained attention in media outlets such as the Lancet and New York Times and is studied in global and public health programs throughout the world. The HIF is supported by an advisory board that includes Nobel Prize-winner Anindya Sen, former Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, former MSF president James Orbinski, and founder of Partners in Health Paul Farmer. Right now we are working on advancing a pilot that would test the HIF by getting medicines to people who desperately need them.
