Combating Mental Illness in Veterans Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is among the most prevalent mental health conditions affecting veterans. Exposure to death, violence, perilous situations, and severe injuries rewires their brains, leading to unhealthy behaviors and thought patterns. Similarly, combat can induce a nearly constant state of stress, causing veterans to remain on high alert even after returning to their families. Women veterans are particularly susceptible to military sexual trauma, including assault and harassment. Despite these critical issues, the mental health of veterans is often neglected, as the focus remains solely on their combat duties. This means that upon returning home, veterans with mental health conditions frequently lack adequate services. Many may experience PTSD symptoms, suicidal thoughts, and develop substance abuse disorders as a means of coping. While abusing drugs and alcohol might offer temporary relief, it ultimately exacerbates their PTSD, driving them deeper into addiction. Many veterans are unaware of how and where to get help.
