In 1996, HEMIC was founded to serve Hawaii’s businesses and workers, both large and small, now and in the future. This is not only our mission but our kuleana - and we take it very seriously. As the leading provider of workers’ compensation insurance in the state of Hawaii, we insure over 7000 Hawaii businesses and protect over 75,000 workers. We are committed to serving Hawaii for many years to come, which means that we have an unwavering focus on sustaining the capital strength necessary to keep our financial promises in the future. As Hawaii’s only mutual insurance company, our accountability is to our policyholders, who are our shareholders. One example of HEMIC’s strength is our declaration of a $4 million dividend in 2023 – our 17th consecutive year of sharing financial success with our policyholders. Last year, over 80% of HEMIC policyholders received a dividend payment. As a leader in safety and loss prevention programs, we work to prevent injuries as well as care for them. We work hand-in-hand with employers and workers to educate, advocate and practice safety. If an injury on the job does occur, we work closely to ensure the employee receives timely care, optimal recovery and return to work. All of this takes a lot of hard work, but we consider the safety and productivity of Hawaii’s economy to be more than just our birthright – it is our kuleana.
