The Heygate group spans farming, flour and feed milling and baking, with seven flour mills on three sites, a feed mill, two modern bakeries and 7500 acres of mainly arable land in England. The Heygate group now employs over 900 staff, compared to just 20 in 1935. The seven flour mills over three sites consume more than 450,000t of wheat a year, the vast majority coming from British farms. More than 80 grades of flour are produced, for breads, cakes, pizzas, burger buns, chapattis, biscuits and more besides, supplying large manufacturing plants, in-store supermarket bakeries and craft bakers, delivering 24/7. The feed mill now produces 110,000 tonnes of feed each year for cattle, sheep, pigs, poultry, horses, rabbits and camelids. All the feeds manufactured at Bugbrooke Mills are vegetarian, no animal proteins are used. A team of qualified nutritionists are available to provide ration formulation and technical advice for customers. The group’s main farming operation is 5,500 acres of fully irrigated breckland around Swaffham and Beachamwell in Norfolk. Cropping includes salad, ware, crisping and chipping potatoes, plus wheat and barley, mostly for seed, rye for malting or baking and sugar beet, as well as letting land for carrot, parsnip and onion production. A further 1000 acres around Harrold in Bedfordshire and 1000 acres around Northampton produce milling wheat, oilseed rape and beans.
