About Higher Education Consortia
The Cost Study is a not-for-profit, national longitudinal study that addresses the need for in-depth cost and productivity data in higher education. By giving participants insight into program-level direct instructional costs, faculty-level teaching loads, and separately budgeted research and public service activities, it provides an improved understanding of cost differences by academic program, as well as cost trends and drivers. It also provides national benchmarks by Carnegie Classification, highest degree offered, and percent undergrad for effective benchmarking and peer analyses. Why The Cost Study: • Provides national benchmarks and custom peer analyses. • Promotes excellence in resource utilization. • Targets productivity improvements. • Collects longitudinal data to track trends. • Is widely accepted and used nationally. • Is a not-for-profit study run by a higher education institution. • Offers unrestricted access to a team of data experts. What analyses are offered to participants? • National Norms by Carnegie Classification, highest degree offered, and percent undergrad • Standard and Program-Specific Peer Analyses with self-selected or data- driven peer groups • Complete Institution Report with ratio tables • Additional comparisons for consortia and state systems, including SUG and AAU schools The study is conducted annually by the Higher Education Consortia (HEC), a diverse group of more than 700 four-year, public and private, non-profit colleges and universities that have contributed data to The Cost Study since its inception in the 1990s. In continued collaboration with an advisory board, various regional and national associations, and policy experts, HEC is committed to guiding research and public understanding of the changing realities that affect productivity and cost in higher education.
