Every night, over 4 million young people in the United States experience homelessness. Many have aged out of foster care or fled unsafe environments. We need more than just shelter. We need real solutions that provide stability, support, and a sense of community. At Higher Ground Abodes, we are committed to addressing this crisis through cooperative housing models that empower youth and create lasting change. We provide sustainable, shared living spaces for those earning 30% or less of the area median income, with a particular focus on vulnerable young people. Our mission goes beyond just offering shelter. We aim to create environments where individuals can thrive emotionally, socially, and economically. Projects, like the Level Up Cooperative Camp, offered youth the opportunity to build skills, take ownership for their housing, and form lasting connections. The insights gained from these programs shape our vision for a new cooperative home in Detroit's Conant Garden neighborhood, combining individual privacy with shared responsibility to address the housing crisis. With homelessness among youth continuing to rise, Higher Ground Abodes provides a crucial lifeline.
