About Historic West Bottoms Association
The West Bottoms’ place in our region’s history and development is truly unique and began with trading among Native Americans and the French. The area, originally identified and known as Kawsmouth and later the French Bottoms, is centrally located and has been essential to the growth and development of the entire region. When the West Bottoms was founded in 1871, it was a hub for Kansas City’s livestock and meatpacking industries. Today, it’s a thriving retail, entertainment and business district. The area’s First Friday Weekends are one of the city’s most popular events, drawing thousands of visitors to West Bottoms businesses every month. The nonprofit Historic West Bottoms organization aims to create community among those who live, work and play in the area. HWB comprises volunteers from the community including local business owners, employees, landlords, residents and people passionate about the importance of West Bottoms growth and revitalization who advocate for public and private improvements for the welfare of businesses and industry in the Central Industrial District to continue the area’s successful growth.
