About Hobart Women's Shelter
The Hobart Women's Shelter provides safe, emergency accommodation and support to women and children who are affected by family violence and/or those who are experiencing homelessness. The Shelter operates 25 emergency accommodation units and 10 transitional properties that provide medium term accommodation for families. Our team use a trauma-informed practice framework to assist women and children to address their unique and specific needs such as housing, legal, health, education, employment, financial, and emotional support. We offer a holistic range of therapeutic programs to empower women and children to lead independent and fulfilling lives. Every program has an emphasis on promoting wellbeing, enhancing self-esteem, confidence, and interpersonal growth. Programs are designed to encourage individual capacity building and empowerment through individual and shared experiences. The Hobart Women's Shelter raises awareness about issues experienced by women and children who are homeless and/or affected by family violence. We work with the community through advocacy, partnerships, education, training and consultation, including the Mentors in Violence Prevention program. In 2022, we embarked on an ambitious project to build 25 new permanent homes for women and children – with our first two homes being built at Herdsman’s Cove due for completion in 2024.
